Gas & Weather #'S ARE FALLING, HNY!

I just couldn't believe it. I seriously got a full tank of gas (17.17 gals.) for only $34.00! Wow! I feel like I've gone back 10 years. Now I don't typically allow my tank to get so low but I was collecting points and hoping for the prices to continue falling. It's dropped even more since I filled up on Wed. Doncha love it?

Gas prices aren't the only things dropping here, weather temps are too. We're expecting a hard freeze snap for the next few days. I know, I know, for many of you you've been in a freeze snap for some time but we don't usually get this 'til Feb. maybe Jan. Looks like we're gonna get a winter this year.

With these low temps we need to pay attention to the 4 P's. What the heck are those? You may ask. Well,here they are;
People; bundle up
Pets; keep them inside and give them some extra bedding to cuddle up in. Cray-ray's been sleeping next to me for a couple of weeks now and Putney's always next to the bed but I have a feeling he'll be climbing up with me & gato now, Rowdy takes the dog bed at night.
Plants; cover them with some cloth, or bring 'em inside
Pipes; cover them with insulation or towels to prevent freezing and bursting

I wrapped my pipes a few years back and have never taken it off. Sadly, every year we hear on the news, someone's pipes have burst and the flooding of their home and more.

I sure hope your holiday brought you all you wanted. I must say, the decision to not exchange gifts made it a very wonderful Christmas. Giving more focus on family time and sharing whats truly important.

It did get a little dicey when I got a call from the adult care home about Mom. She claimed to not be feeling well and was somewhat hostile with them, just as she got the night before Thanksgiving. I called and spoke with her after I got the call and told her I'd call as I left work and see if she felt good enough to join us this time. When I called, she seemed to be up & ready to go. Even a little pushy about it. What a surprise, right? Oh well, bottom line, she came and we had the family together, quite possibly her last time. I hope not, I'd love her to see her first great-grandchild born.

Mom was pretty shaky when I picked her up though and the caregiver thinks she's having panic attacks. Could well be the case, she's so clueless all the time of where she is and forgetful. I can't imagine what that's like. It must be frightening for her.

I'm sore from a couple of the classes I had to teach on Christmas day as we had a skeleton crew for the day. I'm hoping that "they" allow me to teach these types of classes a bit more now and not just because the other instructors are on vacation. It makes me feel alive again to teach them. Makes me more active, less grouchy and, quite frankly, less bored. Both classes were strength-based classes. They're good for me to do too. One class I used to use a bench but I used physioballs for a bench instead. Holy moley! I thought my legs & glutes were going to fall off. I do a fairly long grouping of exercises, 1 right after the other, and we held a ball bridge the entire time.

***What the heck is a bridge on the ball?*** Well, you sit on top of the ball, walk your feet forward and you will begin to lie back on the ball. Make sure your head & shoulders are supported on the ball. Squeeze your buttocks and lift them up to ball height. Hold them them up while you perform any exercise you would normally do lying on a bench. You'll get quite an isometric work load on those hamstrings, quads and glutes. Whoo! And...yes, the abs and adductors (inner thighs) are firing too. Just a word to the wise here, you'll probably have to lesson the amount of weight you're lifting due to the added workload of the other body parts firing at the same time. Not by too much, but a bit.

There are many different ways to utilize the physioball or stability ball in your workouts. Try it sometime to spice things up or completely change your workouts. It'll make your body respond differently to a simple exercise.Remember, you should change up your workouts every 4-6 weeks if change in your body is the goal.

The new year is almost here. 2015! What expectations have you set for yourselves? Mine is to get back the strength and cardio-respiratory endurance I had prior to my knee issues. Also, to try & not sweat the small stuff. I have gotten better at that but still can improve upon it. I plan to pay off a couple of bills, take a fabulous vacation, get some work done on the house and all in all, be a better human being.

Please, be careful out there on the road. Between the weather and celebrations, folks aren't on top of things so stay safe.

Happy New Year, may it bring you all you could ever want or need. I wish you health & happiness.

Peace and as always, keep dancing!

Happiest of Holidays To You All

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Finally, a chill is in the air. Starting to feel like Fall, now. I actually had to take off the frost/ice on the windshield 1 morning. We've gotten everything, well almost, sunshine, rain, frost on the windshield, muddy foot and paw prints on the tile floors in my house. Still, I love it. Usually, we just get hot & hotter here in Tucson, Az.

I know my friends on the West coast and family & friends in the mid-west & east coast have been quite severely hit, weather-wise. I hope you're all safe & sound. I'm just in & out of boots & sandals and t-tops & sweatshirts. Easy-peasy for us out here.

My quads, hamstrings & glutes are rather sore today, and have been since I taught a class that deals with the derriere. Holy moley! I love it though. I love being able to teach (& do) more classes now. I think the powers that be forgot I can & want to teach these classes. I believe I was being protected due to my knee but not necessary any longer.

It felt soooooo good to do this again. I knew I'd "feel the love" after, and was happy to do so. It's just gonna make my legs stronger, can't beat that, right?

It's soup weather. Last weekend I made some fresh cream of broccoli ("choppin' bro-cco-li-eee!") soup. YUM! Delicious. This weekend, fresh cream of mushroom soup. I like to use a few different types of mushrooms in my soup. Maybe it's just in my mind but it seems to give such a rich, full flavor. I'm having my sis, G., over for dinner tonight. she'd even told her son-in-law about my mushroom soup, not knowing I was planning it for dinner. Pretty cool to hear.

I've had my broccoli soup on the recipe page forever, just scroll down it's archived, and I've just added my cream of mushroom soup for you. Try it and feel free to make whatever changes you want. Then, let me know what you think and added or removed to your soup.

The rest of our meal tonight will be a beef roast on the grill. Of course I'll be seasoning it with some of Buck & Judy's Dang Rub. Slow, indirect grilling for a 2-3 hours, some snow peas in the wok, G's bringing some sort of dessert, and Voila! Dinner. Yum, yum, yum.

Don't forget, stay healthy, but if you do catch something, stay home so as to not infect anyone else.

What ever your beliefs, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Ramadan, Kwanza. I wish you all the happiness & love you can handle.

Peace & keep dancing.

Flu Season & The Holiday Season

Well done ladies ...and M! My friends & I rocked it Thursday night. Dance week went great, besides the usual DIVA attitudes by a few people, mainly 1 person, we worked it all very nicely.

It felt great, for me, to not be on the edge with choreography this time. I decided to take a break, just dancing in 1 instead. Don't get me wrong, I love to choreograph but it is tiring & tough with our time constraints and all. M & D were amazing with M's hip-hop piece and M even got her fiance, another M, out there dancing. So freakin' cute! I'm already listening to music for next May though. I've been asked by someone to choreograph something she can be in so... !

Now, on to the serious side, the flu.  I just heard this weekend that the flu vaccine out there doesn't work on the newest flu type out there. It does with all of the other strains but not the new 1. So, please, if you start feeling the symptoms, STAY HOME! Don't go to work and infect your co-workers. Not nice.

Whats the difference between the flu & a cold you may ask well I've done some homework for ya.

According to the Huffington Post, the flu is typified as an all over achy body thing whereas the cold is mainly an upper respiratory thing.

The flu is also a respiratory infection but with other systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, body aches, headaches, dry coughing. The cold shows mainly as a runny nose and
respiratory congestion.

When or even should you go to the Dr.? Well, in most cases you really don't need to go but if you experience severe dehydration, lethargy, confusion, hell yeah, GO! If you're pregnant, your child is under 5 yrs., you have an immune system disorder, yes, Go! Otherwise, just stay home, stay hydrated and take care of yourself. It won't do you, your family, friends and co-workers any good if you infect them with the flu virus. Or a clod for that matter.

Have you heard of the Surfset? Well, I have now. It's a surfboard on top of a long base attached with a pair of bungee-like cords on both sides to remove to alter the amount  of stability, with 3 inflated bladders (balls) in between the board and the base to really cause instability. Whew! It's going to be awhile before I'm comfortable on the board with my new knee. It's fairly high and I've just recently been able to step up on a high podium and a workout bench without holding onto something so I'm pretty nervous. It's really unstable. And getting up isn't really the hard part, it's getting down that's the real issue. I need to check the warranty on my knee. It's not uncommon to come off of the board unintentionally, if you get my drift. I will say that what I did manage to do on the board caused me a bit of soreness in my chest, shoulders & upper arms. Good stuff.

I found it kind of interesting that my new knee felt okay with being up on the board but my "good" knee did some talking to me. Hmmmm, what can that mean, I wonder.

I do know what I need to do to begin working on this board. If I continue the strength work, get on a Beamfit beam, a 360 board, my coreboard and practice some step-ups I should be able to gain the confidence and strength to work on the Surfset. I just need to be patient with myself and get the work done.

Merry Christmas to me! I just recently bought a new leather sofa and recliner chair and they got delivered last week. Man, are they ever gorgeous. I love them.

Cray-ray, the cat has kind of taken over the sofa, yes, I have a throw over it. He gets right in the middle of the sofa. He seems very happy on the thing. Thankfully the 2 dogs don't get up on the furniture. They'd be wrecked in no time if they did.

Now be sure to be aware with all of the holiday parties going on right now. Drive responsibly, drink responsibly and stay safe for yourself and others. We want you all around this upcoming year.

Keep dancing and...

Peace!

Holidays, Food Comas and Weight Gain? The Aftermath!

12/1/2014

Oh boy, Thanksgiving dinner almost did me in. I was sooooooooooo stuffed. It was all so delicious. My contributions to the festivities were the pumpkin pie, the fresh whipped cream to go with it, a Waldorf salad and my famous clam dip. (I also made the pie crust dough for my sis' and another friends' apple pies.) I also worked Thanksgiving day from 6:30am - noon. Stuffed and pooped by the end of the day but oh so grateful to be with my family and share the love.

Mom wasn't feeling up to par so she didn't come, even though I went to get her, gave her my Turkey Trot t-shirt (and hell no, I didn't run it, just got one) and my lunch given to me at work! As I was leaving she then pretty much demanded that we come back and deliver to her 3 plates of dinner! Excuse me?!?  I was a bit stunned. Plus, she's poking her finger at me exclaiming "I'm serious." It's the dementia. I have to keep telling myself that, it's the dementia. Agggghhhhhh!

We did make up a plate but they're going to have to share it all. She didn't get it 'til the next day either. ...And no, she wasn't happy about having to wait.

I really hate this disease known as Alzheimer's. It seems to have literally killed my mother and replaced her with this pod person whose self-absorbed, mean, nasty, attention hungry, self-pitying, you get the idea, blah, blah, blah.

John's Hopkins website, www.johshopkinshealthalerts.com listed 10 warning signs of dementia for you to be on the lookout for in your loved ones. It's gre
at because it also mentions typical age-related issues to NOT be confused with dementia. Here ya go with the signs;

How to Tell the Difference Between Dementia
and Normal Aging: 10 Warning Signs

As more brain researchers are finding that subjective cognitive complaints may be the earliest sign of Alzheimer's disease, how can you tell the difference between normal age-related memory problems and early Alzheimer's? The following 10 warning signs from the Alzheimer's Association will help you differentiate the two.

1. Significant memory changes. Forgetting important dates, events or appointments and repeatedly asking for the same information. If you are aging normally, you may sometimes forget names and doctor appointments, but not important events. Once you are reminded, you will continue to remember them.

2. Difficulty solving problems or making plans. Difficulty doing things that were once easy such as keeping track of bills, working with numbers or following a recipe. When you age normally, you may occasionally make mistakes on these tasks but not routinely.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work and play. Inability to complete normal daily tasks, trouble driving a car to and from a familiar location or difficulty remembering the rules of a favorite game. An age-related issue would be needing help to work an HD television or change settings on a microwave.

4. Confusion with time or place. Losing track of the passage of time, forgetting day and year or not knowing how one arrived at a destination. With age-related changes, a person can be slightly confused about the day of the week but will figure it out when given clues and then retain it.

5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. Difficulty with judging distance, reading and determining color or contrast. Vision troubles may be a sign of Alzheimer's for some people. Recognizing familiar places or people, not just family or friends but even famous people, may become challenging. Blurred vision or changes in eyeglass prescription are typical age-related changes.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. Increasing trouble joining a conversation, calling things by the wrong name or repeating oneself. Occasional trouble finding the right word is a normal age-related issue.

7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. Putting things in unusual places, losing things and being unable to find them or accusing people of stealing. Misplacing things from time to time but being able to retrace steps to find them is not an uncommon age-related issue.

8. Decreased or poor judgment. Difficulty dealing with money or giving money away, often to strangers, when this is not a lifelong behavior. Making a bad decision once in a while is a normal age-related problem.

9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. Becoming weary of work, family and social obligations: trouble remembering how to complete a favorite hobby or how to keep up with a favorite sports team. People with normal age-related complaints will sometimes complain of work, family and social obligations but their activity level does not dramatically decrease.

10. Changes in mood and personality. Becoming confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. A normal age-related change entails doing things a certain way and becoming irritable when the routine is disrupted.

Moms pretty much got all of these going. Maybe not #5 so much but the others...oh yeah, definitely. There's also a fixation thing going on with her. She fixates on needing a Kleenex in hand. She'd fall before letting go of that thing. There's always something, if she falls, it's that point of contact for days, weeks and even months. Long after the issue is over.

She does like to do word book puzzles but actually makes up her own words. Reading road signs can be pretty interesting too. I have no idea where some of the words come from but they're not whats on the sign.

I can't tell you how many times she's introduced me to same people again and again and again. It's difficult to not say something and just go along with it but I try. Kinda makes me crazy though, I have to admit.

This may sound mean but when I tried to get her to come with me to Thanksgiving dinner she said "You'll all be better without me there and in pain."  We all actually did a little happy dance in agreement. Is that mean? Yeah, it is but it was also true. I'm going to hell, I know it, right? Oh well. So be it.

I don't do the frantic shopping thing either. Never have. For me, it takes away from the meaning of the holidays themselves. I wouldn't shop or decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I can't stand it when Christmas music is playing and Halloween hasn't even come yet. Ugh! This mad rush and fighting for this item or that one is crazy! What are we teaching our kids? It's all about the gift? NO! It isn't people. Take back the holiday.enjoy thanksgiving for what it is, not when you can shop.Just sayin'.

We've apparently made a decision to not buy gifts for the family this year. I say it this way 'cuz I was presented this idea after Thanksgiving dinner by my niece & sis. Mom hasn't really got any money anymore for gifts, having to pay for the adult care home now, my bro has retired, I had major surgery and have less available cash on hand (but I'm doing fine,) and I remember Mom being very upset by not being able to buy us anything as was my bro when he was outa work 1 year. So, the rest of us have decided to not exchange gifts. We'll still have a dinner and celebrate but without the pressure to buy things for each other that none of us really have a need for.

Shhhhhhh, I might buy a couple little things anyway though. I just like it. when I see something that screams out someone, I just have to get it for them. Get over it, I ain't changin' now.

Next week is the infamous Dance Week at work. I decided not to choreograph this time but I am in a funk/jazz dance piece. Oh good grief! It's being choreographed by a very talented, YOUNG gal at work. I have to tell ya, I haven't danced this style in some time and it's making me work. Holy moley, it's tough, although I secretly love the challenge. We've had 2 official rehearsals and 1 impromptu rehearsal among 4 of us and the show is next week. Yikes! We still have some more to learn and it's getting exciting.

I'm a bit stiff from an upper body workout I did as well. The bench press went without a hitch in the elbow this time but it did speak up some during my single-arm bicep curl on the cable machine.

Well, the food coma has abated and the dancing has begun.December has arrived, the days are shorter and colder. I'm actually wearing a sweatshirt to work these days, but still in sandals.

Stay warm and sane and active. Eat healthy, enjoy friends & family. Watch the party intake and...let the games begin.

Keep dancing. Peace to us all
