"Sweet Dreams"

8/23/2014

Another dance recital for Dance Week has come & gone. A friend finally managed to post it for me so here's my belly dance piece to Metallica's "Enter Sandman." I hope Metallica doesn't mind that I borrowed their song. I named the piece "Sweet Dreams"

The song played on the radio one day as I was driving to work and all of this movement just filled my head. I knew right then & there that I had to choreograph it or I'd never be released from it. I hope you enjoy it.

I have to admit, it was fun to dance it. Especially with the mood I was in. Helped me to get some issues out of my body, maybe a tad outa my mind too but the jury's still out on that one.

Yes, this past week was in line with the previous 2 weeks. I don't know why this month has been such a pisser, but it has. Oh well, 3 weeks down, 1 to go. Let's hope this coming week fairs better than the last 3.

I've been trying for at least a 500 calorie deficit/day these last couple of weeks and it's been working. It's been made a bit easier by an app I found on my Samsung phone that's pretty easy to use. It's the "S" health app. You can set up your profile, what your weight goal is and begin to keep track of it all. Food intake, calorie expenditure. Much easier than the other one I tried.

This one, when you type in something, it'll even display store brands as well as many restaurant brands and dishes. You can also set up "favorites" and custom foods and/or exercises. I did Google some specific activities I do for the approximate caloric expenditure and the app adjusts it for the actual amount of time you spend during the activity.

The app tells you, based on your goals, how many calories to consume and calories to burn per day. I have to say that it does help to look at what you eat each day. By that I mean write it down and really look at it. It can truly be an eye-opener,folks.

My sis is doing the Paleo diet thing which I believe I've stated in earlier posts, I'm not so thrilled about but... what can I do. People say I'm stubborn, they haven't met her! Yes, she has lost some weight too but I'm not cutting anything out that I want to eat, I'm just being more responsible about it

Sorry folks, I just don't like these fad diet things. Honestly, if you don't have celiac disease, there's no real reason to be gluten-free either. I'm just sayin'. To me if you break apart the word diet just take a look at what you read. DIE-T! No thanks. Common sense folks. Stop messing with your body that way. Just be sensible. Of the weight I put on after the surgery on my knee, I've lost 7.5 #'s that I know of. We'll have to wait & see on my next weigh-in.

Yesterday's activities were such a disaster. I was supposed to have my annual at the Dr.'s yesterday. Since I made the appointment on Mon. I knew the time I was supposed to be there. I never looked at my calender app for the time. I get there, check=in and the guy calls me back up to the counter and tells me I'm an hour late! Say WHAT?!? I look in my calender and I've got the time I thought it was to be in there. I wrote it while making the darn appointment, by the way. Trying to make the most of it, I make a new appointment for a few weeks later and then ask if I might just get the bloodwork taken care of today. He says yes, so I wait. And I wait, and wait and wait, 1.5 hours! Then, I'm told I have no paperwork for it. Aaaaggghghhhhhhhhh! I said, " I'm done." and walked out. such a waste of my time.

Now, I'm not sure which of us screwed up the time of the appointment but I really don't think it was me. I had that time in my head all 5 days of the week and then I had it in my calender as I thought, so..... I do remember that I had to spell my last name to the scheduler over & over again, At least 5 times. Remember how difficult my last name is E-D-E-L-E-N! Next, I go to my mom's to go to lunch and do her pills for the week, she's already had lunch even though I tried calling her 3 times and left 2 messages. Oh well. She said she'd called me but there were no calls to my phone from her. I text'd my niece to see if she accidentally called her again but, no. Who knows who she called, if she called anyone at all. Her memory is really going fast so it could all be in her mind.

I took myself out to breakfast and went home. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, home. My favorite place. I took a long, hot bubble bath and just tried to chill.

We've lost some amazing people as of late. Don Pardo, Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall. Now, 2 of them had a long, great run at life but 1 was way to young.

So sad to think that a being who brought so much joy and laughter to the world was so distraught in his own life and couldn't find some comfort and relief from the riggers of it all. RIP, all of you. You are loved and will be so sorely missed.

On a different note, I'm having my sis over for dinner tonight. I'm grilling a couple of Cornish hens on the grill. I'm also gonna grill some other chicken breasts and a steak too, for the rest of the week's lunches & dinners. Yum! I'll be using indirect heat for the hens. we'll be having a chopped salad, dessert and chow down.

I'm going to season the hens, well all of the meats really, with Buck & Judy's Dang Rubs, of course. The hens'll get No. 23 I believe. The sweet-hot one. She can have the seasoning. She'll bring her own dressing for the salad though. That paleo thing again. Ugh!

Well, here's to the end of August and to hoping September fairs better for me than August did.

Be well and peace out. But, most of all, keep dancing!

Finding Gratitude in the Midst of Chaos

8/16/2014

Again, I'm glad this week is over too. I'm done with the BS that people try to push onto you. Sorry, just had to get that outa my system. Anyone else having that kind of August?

A colleague posted a 7-day Life Gratitude Challenge on facebook, challenging some of us to follow suit. Not the best week for me to try to find some gratitude in my world, but then again, maybe it was.

I have 1 more day to go on this challenge and who knows what I'll find. I will say though, it's made me look beyond the petty people, places & things to find these but find 'em I did.

It's so easy to let the BS cloud over all the wonderful out there, like working with a sweet, delightful client, being able to dance like I used to, laugh with abandon with friends & family. It makes the wonderful moments that much more special in a crazy sort of way. I'll just pick myself up, dust myself off and move on. So there. Movin' on.

I threw in some leg work this past week to my workouts. I've added the seated leg press (I actually put some decent weight on the thing for the 1st time since my surgery), single-leg press, sumo squats w/weight and of course my side steps w/tubing.

Holy moley, did my butt hurt some the next day?!?  Whew! It's all good though, right? Right. There's definitely some weakness in the R leg. But, the only way to gain that back is to work on it. It won't change just thinking about it.

I have finally shed another couple of lb's.
I hadn't been on the scale for a few weeks so it was nice to see something happen correctly.

I did end the week by receiving a body wrap as a gift from my masseur, Sergio at U Love Massage. It began will some herbal oil, a body scrub then being wrapped in warm towels and a thermal blanket and let alone for 30 min. I do have to say that my R shoulder wasn't quite covered and got chilled but other than that, YUM! That was followed by a 60 min. massage that I did pay for. Boy, did I feel great after that. Terrific! I really love massages, if I could have 1 every day I think I would. But I don't have the time let alone the cash for that so once a month will have to do.

I'm also glad that the knot that was in my L shoulder appears to have dissipated and is no longer a painful issue.

Dance week is this coming week and I've scheduled 2 rehearsals for the Belly dance piece.
These will be the 1st time we've all done the piece together and the recital is Thursday. Yikes1 It'll be great. Even if I have to be in it. As you well know, I don't like being in my work but with 2 people unable to be here, I had to step in. We'll see what happens. should be just fine.

The boys of the household are all doing great even though we've been having some intense weather.
All are safe & sound. Rowdy did manage to collect a Jolla bud (commonly know as a jumping cactus) but I got it off of him without issue. Those things can attach themselves to you so easily. You only have to gently brush by & there you have it. It's awful if they burrow in but he has so much hanging fur it did get the chance. It was just hanging off of him.

Putney & Rowdy are both so pooped right now after our long walk, they just lie there
panting away. These walks don't hurt me much either. My dance teacher has closed the studio for 2 weeks so no belly dance for me.

Well, off to clean up the backyard then the inside of the house today before I go see some friends who are back in the country for a moment. They've been teaching in South America for the last year & have re-up'd
and heading back in a couple of days.

Keep movin', keep dancin', keep playing and don't sweat the small stuff.

Peace out.

Glad the Week Is Over

I'm happy to say that my 3 boys and I are doing fabulous together. Everyone gets along great for the most part. Of course there's a mild scuffle from time to time but no biting, just a little posturing. All is good. It's kinda nice having this much love and affection in the house. Although, I do have to watch my footing alot. I had to go buy Cray-ray another (this is his 4th) collar with a bell on it, so I know where he is. He's not that thrilled with it but he'll get used to it again. I wonder how long this 1 will last.

Did you know that yesterday was National S'mores Day? Seriously. I understand National Doughnut Day but s'mores? "They" believe that s'mores were invented by the Campfire Girls but it wasn't until the Girl Scouts published the recipe around 1927, that they became widely known and therefore thoroughly enjoyed. There doesn't seem to be any real verification that it truly is a national holiday, which would need to be from an act of Congress by the way, (we know how fast they tend to work at getting things done, don't we?) so I say Who cares? Lets eat! Just 1 though.

Last week at work was a bit draining, I have to say. the universe just seemed off. I was exhausted from nothing and it seemed to be the same for most of my colleagues too. Nothing went quite right. I'm so glad its over and I'm on to a better feeling in the universe.

Next week is dance week at work again and I'll be performing in my Metallica belly dance piece.
Should be a hoot. My bud M. never did get me the video she took of the dance last time so hopefully we'll get it this time.

Ooooh, there's thunder crashing outside right now. I got caught in a rainfall on my home from work but it stopped about 3 miles from home. I think I might get some here at the house soon though. Big crack just over head. Poor Putney is none too happy about this thunder. My poor bear. I guess he'll be "protecting" me 'til it passes by.

I made a wonderful pasta sauce over the weekend. Pored it over some cheese tortillini with a bit of freshly grated Parmesan cheese for dinner last night. I even took some to work for my boss.

This time instead of removing the sausage from the casings, I just cut them into chunks for sausage balls. As per usual
, I use 1/2 sweet Italian and 1/2 hot Italian sausages. I spray the crockpot with olive oil, plop in the meat, added 1 can each of tomato paste, diced tomatoes and crushed tomatoes, 4 cloves of fresh garlic smashed, thyme, oregano and basil, sea salt, fresh ground pepper plus 1/2 a red onion, 1 C water, alot of red wine and some sugar. (The sugar to cut some of the acidity of the tomatoes). I slow cooked it for about 6 hours. YUM!

1/2 of the sauce went directly into the freezer. 1 healthy sized container in the fridge and a 1/2 sized container to my friend & boss.

If you read my blogs, you know I don't often make things the same way twice. I like trying different spices and ingredients depending on my mood.

Here's my point, don't be afraid of change. Go for it. You might surprise yourself by liking a different flavor or exercise regimen. A new style of workout can really be a treat. Just like a new tasty treat.

Just because dance is my main love doesn't mean that I don't like to try other types of cardio or strength workouts. Don't get bogged down with the same ole, same ole. Your body will thank you for it. It may respond by losing weight, gaining weight if you want, getting firmer or stronger, increasing your stamina or your mental awareness.

Be adventuresome.
Test those boundaries, enjoy life.

Peace out folks and stay healthy

More Or Less Stress With Pets

PictureMeet Rowdy
Well, well, well, my house seems to be getting smaller these days. I've added a 2nd dog into the home, Rowdy. He's actually my sis' dog, a border collie, but he doesn't like the the condo life he's been having to live the past year.

Border collies are a working dog breed and when G. was in her house he had access to the backyard all of the time. Now he doesn't and she would take him out before and after work for him to take care of his "business" but that was it. Only about 10 min. a pop. I knew that that was no wheres near the time he needed to be walked and did try to tell her but she just ignored me most of the time, as usual!

PictureThis was Cray-ray when I first got him at 2 months
Hmmm, as of late he began to tell her so himself. Since he couldn't tell her in words, (I know, DUH!) he started to show her. Yup! You guessed it. He began peeing in the condo. This was driving her nuts. She was stressed out about it and the place really began to reek. New rugs by the way. G. was not happy. Again, I tried to tell her he was bored and needed more exercise but no response. And no change in his behavior no matter what she did.

She was really getting upset, understandably so, so I offered to take him in. We gave it a trial run for a few days and SURPRISE!, no peeing, nothing bad at all. She decided to take him to the vet to get checked out, urine & blood work to rule out any physical issues but, no news to me, he checked out fine. She finally had to admit he was bored. she decided to keep him that night, last Thurs., and uh-oh, not only did he pee but he also pooped in the condo. I got a call from her the next morning while I was walking Putney that she was on her way over to bring him back.

She's worried that now she's gonna be totally alone. This is new for her. It's gonna be a tough transition for her but of course I said she could come over any time she wanted.
Animals can be a wonderful stress reliever, but in cases like this, they can cause more stress than relieve. I'll probably go over to visit her a little more than usual to keep her company for a time but thats what family does, right?

Luckily, all 3 of the "boys" get along fairly well. Rowdy charges at the kitten in play alot, the kitten runs around like crazy and Putney looks at them both like, "What the hell are you doin'?"

Actually, I think the kitten may well be a full grown cat now. We got him in early October of last year and he was 2 months old, It's now August so doing the math, he's a year old now.

PictureCray-ray at 1 year
This is Cray-ray now. He's still nuts and has become quite the little hunter. Yuck, lizards and birds. I'll leave it at that. He gets so mad at me when I take his "toys" away and try to save them.

Any ways, doing the right thing for the animal rather than ourselves isn't always easy and I commend my sis for letting Rowdy go even though it hurt her to do so. He's pretty happy here. We just came back from a long walk and both dogs are out cold. We walk most every day. Occasionally, I wake up late and we have to miss 1 but thats rare.

On a whole other note, I woke up Thursday morning with pink eye. Oh, just great. The left side of my left eyeball is completely red. It looks horrible. The good news is that it doesn't hurt, just looks ghoulish. I looked it up on the internet and found that I could've scratched it a little or something like dust or a fallen eyelash can cause this to happen. "They" say that if it's only 1 eye, it doesn't hurt one should not be alarmed, so I'm not. That is until someone looks at me and screams out "Whats wrong with your eye?" which I heard quite a bit at work from my colleagues.

Of course my best bud D. took it to the extreme, worrying, I guess rightly so, that it was my blood pressure. I do have a mild high blood pressure issue but I kept telling her that that was more than likely, not the problem. But, in fairness to D., it could've been a huge issue.

It really looked gross when I looked to the right with my eyes. Kinda fun to freak my friends out.

Well, I'm happy to report that this morning though not gone, it is considerably better with some white showing on the left side of the white of my left eye. Whew! Got that? It was a mouthful to put together.

As for my workouts, I had to change up the exercises. I kept adding weight and not really feeling any results and I don't want to bulk up just regain my strength & stamina. Besides, it was time for a change. I didn't bother with the scale at all this last week. It just ticks me off and I don't need the pressure I put myself through when I don't like what I see.

You all do know that you should change your workouts every 4-6 weeks right? Well, if you didn't, you do now.

I'll post my new workout on the workout page a little later today for you.

I'm also happy to say that my cardiovascular stamina is returning too. I did a HIIT workout on the stationary bike and my heart rate came down quickly again. 30 bpm (beats per minute) during the 1st minute of recovery at the end of a 30 minute workout.

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training
. I did a Tabata workout, or 20 sec.s hard 10 sec.s easy for 4 minutes followed by a 5 m
inute active recovery and repeated that for 3 rounds with a  warm-up & cool-down each consisting of 5 minutes.

It's not how high you can get your HR (heart rate) that gives you your cv fitness but how quickly it comes back down. The 1st minute after exercise is when your HR should really drop. At least 20 BPM's in the 1st minute shows good CV fitness levels. A drop of 12 beats or less in the 1st minute of recovery is considered "abnormal" according to Berkeley Wellness website from the University of Berkeley.

Yes, you can improve you CV fitness levels by working on it. Remember though, don't do intervals every day. You can do cardio every day but only 1-3 of those workouts should be intervals. The rest of your workouts should be Steady State workouts of where you keep your HR around 70-75 BPM for at least 30 minutes.

Here's some good news for those of you who don't have 30 minutes at 1 time to devote to exercise. 3 -10 minute bouts of cardio will give the same benefits of 1-30 minute bout.

Go do something, get up off the couch, move your body. You'll feel so much better after.I promise you. another great way to relieve stress, activity!
