A True Tucsonan!

PictureThats the guy, on the right hand page, top left. Yuck!
It's official. I am a Tucsonan. The other morning as I was about to dry my mouth after brushing my teeth, I put the hand towel up to my face and saw what I thought was a light brown ball of thread on the end of it. It was a fresh towel so it was plausible. I opened up the towel and the little ball of thread seemed to move by itself. Son of a b____h! It was a baby scorpion! Yuck! ...And EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEk, I might add. I had actually touched the towel to my face!

I managed to, eventually, get the thing into the toilet and flush him/her away. Whew! That was a close one. Shook me up the rest of the day. Heck, I'm still shook up. Remember, more than 4 limbs makes me very unhappy. It would've been awful getting stung on my face, although it might've puffed up the smile lines I have. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Ugh.

One more knee milestone for me though. Last Thursday, as I was doing the final stretches in a class I was teaching, I was able to grab my R foot and stretch my quad. Yes, I was lying on my side
but who cares? I was able to reach it. No strap, no nothing.

I can't tell you how huge that was for me. I did contact the PT's I'd worked with to let them know and, of course, to thank them for all of their help, support, encouragement and drive on my behalf. The rest is up to me now, but I'm back. Look out world!

Having realized that I've lost alot of my strength throughout my whole body, I began a strength training regimen. Bench press, lat pulls, dead lifts, concentration curls, split rope tricep pull downs, tubing side-steps and
sit down-stand ups (squats).

I'd focused so much on my leg, everything else suffered so I need to go back to basics and get things back on track. Got 2 workouts in last week, took a Zumba class and made it all the way through, stayed at low impact though, I'm not insane completely. Decided to reinstate my Zumba certification too. They, Zumba that is, made me an offer I couldn't refuse! I figured I can get back some of my stamina through it too.
That's really suffered.

Well, last week I said I was gonna discuss
hydration needs especially in this trriple digit weather we've been having here in Tucson since the 1st of June, actually the end of May. We've had over 12 days of triple digit heat here already. Working in this kind of heat can be deadly if proper precautions aren't adhered to. Things like limiting hours spent out in the sun, drinking enough fluids, shading breaks, etc. You can't even get relief in pools, unless you have a surface sprayer, 'cuz the water is so warm when you get in. It's like a tepid bath tub after 10-11am. Ick!

The basic 8 glasses of water are just not enough in this heat. And...if you're exercising you need to ingest 7-10 oz. of fluids every 20 min. with 60 min. or more of exercise. It's quite abit of fluid but essential. We are about 70-75% water ourselves afterall.
Right?

Dehydration symptoms go from simple to very dangerous pretty quickly. Then there's the heat illnesses themselves to protect against. Things such as; heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke
to name the most common.

I know, this picture is funny but de-hydration is serious. I've seen someone go through de-hydration before. And they did so in a pool! You need to take your water bottle with you to the pool deck. don't take it and leave it on a table, outa reach. It won't do you any good up there. Keep it handy. Remember, just 'cuz you're in water, doesn't mean the water is in you.

I teach alot of water exercise classes and one-on-one sessions and have to practically beg clients to bring their water bottle with them to the deck. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, keep your water close by at all times and drink it often.

Well Judi, what if I don't like water? You might be asking. I don't either, but I drink it all afternoon. If you don't like water, then add a little juice to it. A splash of pomegranate juice, cranberry, something, or a squeeze of lime, orange or lemon. It'll give you a little flavor if necessary. You may want to try a sport drink with little sugar and plenty of electrolytes to help replenish some loss of minerals possibly flushed out of your system. But don't head for the energy drinks. Not a big fan of those things. Not really good for you either. You should be eating enough of good foods to keep you fueled and energized. so you got it now? Good. Have a gulp now, please & thank you.

You remember my friend Barbara Appelbaum right? Well, she's preparing a virtual series on "The 3 C's" related to holding back age-related diseases. She's looking at presenting some time in Oct. of this year on #healthyliving.

The cost will around $10.00 or so/session. Check her out, you'll be a fan, like me, in no time.

Well, get a drink of water, get some exercise and have a fantastic week, everyone.

Peace out.
